ABSTRACT



The effect of the molecular weighting on the esteem of diffusion using ii tests: the drinking glass tube and the agar- weewee mousse test. In the glass tube test, two cotton balls were soaked in two ends of the glass tube. ammonium hydroxide (NH3), with the lighter molecular weight value diffused at a faster rate. Thus, resulting in the formation of a exsanguine smoke in the glass tube moving nearer to the side of the heavier substance Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). The agar-water gel set-up consisted of a agar-water gel in a petri dish containing three tumesces. The compounds: green Permanganate (KmnO4), Potassium Dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and Methylene Blue (C16H18N3SCl) had a drop in each well. Methylene Blue, having the heaviest weight, diffused slowly. Therefore, the heavier the molecular weight, the slower the rate of diffusion.










INTRODUCTION



There are several factors that affect the diffusion rate:
Concentration Gradient the difference in concentration between two areas. The greater the gradient, the faster the diffusion.
Size and Shape of the Molecules small molecules that fit through willing pass at a faster rate.
Temperature the warmer, the faster it leases (more kinetic energy in the particles)
type of medium diffusion is faster in gases than in liquids (more discharge space between the molecules of a gas as well as greater kinetic energy)
Movement of the medium water or air currents speed up diffusion e.g. brainchild or heating can create currents (promotes mixing)

Thus, it can be hypothesized that the substance with the lightest molecular weight (Hydrochloric Acid and Potassium Permanganate) will diffuse faster than of those the heavy ones.
