name was Hannah Simpson and son of Jesse Root Grant. As a little boy, Grant liked working at his fathers farm. But in
1839 his father made an ap arrestment for Grant to count military academy. Grant wasnt tangiblely interested in it, only when he
still went. Grant decided to accede in the academy as Ulysses Hiram. They later found out that his real name was
Ulysses S. Grant, because thats the name he signed under at the appointment. The middle inital of his name stands
for nonhing. So his classmates called him Uncle Sam Grant or sometimes just sam. When he graduated from west
point academy in 1843, Grant was ranked 21st in a class of 39. But Grant distinguished himself in horsemanship, and
showed great ability in math. But after a while Grant got bored of the classes. So he started to enroll in art classes and
took time reading classic novels. later on graduation, Grant was assigned as a brevent second deputy to the 4th U.S
infantary, stationed near St.louis,Missouri. Thats where he fell in distinguish with and married Julia Boggs Dent, the sister
of his roomate in west point.





In the Mexican War, Grant showed skills in campaigns under commonplace Zachary Taylor. Later grant was
transferred to General Winfeild Scotts army as a regimental quartermaster and commissary. Grant distinguished
himself in the battle in September 1847, earning as the first deputy sheriff and captain. Despite his heroism, Grant wrote
years later I do not think there was ever more a wicked war....I thought so at the time....only I had not moral courage
enough to resign. Then came the Civil war. In april 1861. Grant helped by recruiting, equipping, drilling troops in
